Counties Manukau Police Senior Sergeant Jeff Waleron says emergency services are treating a number of fires around the Pukekohe area, south of Auckland, last night as suspicious.

Just after 10pm fire services were called to a fire on Karaka Street at a Golden Homes show home which was badly damaged in the blaze.

Six appliances were at the scene with no reports of any injuries.

Around half an hour later two appliances attended a small fire lit in a classroom at Puni Primary School.

It will be shut today, with parents asked not to send their children to school.

"Devastating news," the school wrote on its Facebook page.

A portacom was set on fire in Karaka, and growers crates were also set alight.
