Two people are missing after they failed to return from a boating trip off Great Barrier Island today.

Police were called to the scene at 11.45am after two poeple left the island after a fishing contest last night but didn't return this morning.

The Auckland Police Maritime Unit is searching for the boat's whereabouts and making enquiries about the occupants' safety.
