The British toddler at the heart of a legal battle in the High Court has died today.
Alfie Evans, 23 months old, died from complications of a rare degenerative brain disease five days after his life support was shut off.
His parents, Thomas Evans and Kate James, announced his death on Facebook, writing, "Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30am. We are heart broken."
The couple lost a legal battle against a High Court ruling which allowed Alder Hey Children's Hospital to stop ventilation, the BBC reports.
The toddler's life support was switched off after more than a year of being left in a semi-vegetative state.
Alfie was first admitted to the Alder Hey Children's Hospital in 2016 after suffering from seizures and had been a patient at the hospital up until his death.
The hospital said in a statement on their website, "We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Alfie's family at this extremely distressing time.
"All of us feel deeply for Alfie, Kate, Tom and his whole family and our thoughts are with them. This has been a devastating journey for them and we would ask that their privacy and the privacy of staff at Alder Hey is respected."
