A boost in dental funding looks to be in the government's sight, but New Zealanders will have to wait for it.

On TVNZ1's Q+A this morning, host Corin Dann asked Health Minister Dr David Clark about the potential to lift government funding of dental health.

Dr Clark said he was looking at expanding public dental health, but "it's unlikely we'll get over the line with that this term".

"I would like to see more affordable access, we have a huge unmet need in dental care."

"We have people struggling with third world health conditions as a result of bad dental hygiene and inability to access the care and treatment they need."

"No New Zealander would think that is OK, we have to do better over time," Dr Clark said.
