Winston Peters says goal of denuclearisation of Korean Peninsula a 'positive first step'

April 28, 2018
Mr Peters said he has been vocal when talking about foreign influence in New Zealand, and says we should be reaching out in the Pacific.

New Zealand's Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters called the goal of denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula a "positive first step towards complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearisation".

North and South Korea signed the Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula yesterday at a summit where denuclearisation was discussed.

"However, this remains a complex issue, and we should not underestimate the challenges ahead in achieving this goal," Mr Peters said.

"Notwithstanding the challenging road ahead, we should not lose sight of the significance of the announcement, which will further reduce tension on the Korean Peninsula, and in the Asia Pacific region more broadly."

"New Zealand will do all we can to support this peace process," he said.
