All Blacks Sevens travelling reserve Caleb Clarke has been struck down by acute appendicitis on the Gold Coast and will miss any chance of competing at the Commonwealth Games.
The 19-year-old Aucklander, the son of former All Black Eroni Clarke, will have emergency surgery in Brisbane today, New Zealand Commonwealth Games team organisers have confirmed.
The team arrived on the Gold Coast on Sunday and Clarke informed medical staff of his complaint that evening.
"He is being supported by the New Zealand team medical staff and his family," the team said in a statement.
"We wish him well for his recovery."
A replacement player has not yet been named.
