Horror Easter weekend road toll: 'Disappointed' and 'frustrated' top cop's message for New Zealand drivers

April 3, 2018
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the fatal incident, while Road Policing Manager Steve Greally says more people are failing to wear a seat belt.

A top policeman says he's "extremely dissapointed" and "highly frustrated" with the Easter Weekend road toll which saw six people dies in crashes.

The official Easter holiday period for 2018 began at 4pm Thursday, March 29 and will ended today at 6am. The six fatalities were three times higher than 2017 .

Superintendent Steve Greally, National Road Policing Manager told 1 NEWS he's "extremely disappointed and highly frustrated with the weekend road toll".

He says it's left the families of the six people killed with immense grief.

Police don't yet know why the crashes occurred, but suspect the four usual causes will be involved including not wearing seat belts, distractions, impairment (alcohol or drugs) and speed.

Mr Greally says he really "feels for the families who have lost loved ones" and that officers will meticulously be looking at what happened in the crashes to get answers for them.

The road toll this year so far sits at 107, 13 higher than last year.

"Last year I called the road toll appalling, I struggle to understand what word I will use this year," Mr Greally says.

His message to Kiwis: "We can't be there every day to remind you what to do on the road."

"Have patience and enjoy the journey".
