Kiwi Commonwealth Games boxer Patrick Mailata will be entering the Gold Coast games this week with a special souvenir still in his possession.
Having sparred with heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in the build up to his bout with Joseph Parker in Cardiff last week, Mailata was given signed gloves by the reigning WBO, WBA, IBF and IBO title holder.
Having initially planned to sell the gloves to fund his Commonwealth Games bid, Mailata will now hold on to them, hoping to see the value increase with Joshua's global profile.
"I figured since Joshua's on a bit of a roll, if I hold on to them they'll be worth more down the track," he told 1 NEWS.
"If I can drag the gold back to my hometown, it's going to be worth a little more."
"There'll definitely be camps that I'll be wanting to go (to) in the future."
Mailata also offered his take on the fight, that saw Parker handed his first ever career loss at the hands of Joshua.
"Our boy (Parker) put in his best effort, he worked hard, he actually worked really hard."
"It is what it is - like he said, the best champ won."
Parker's rise up the heavyweight rankings has served as an inspiration to Mailata, hoping to emulate his compatriot whilst at the games.
"To see someone from south Auckland, someone from New Zealand go that far," he said.
"From such a tiny country to make an impact, and I'll be looking to do the same here on the Gold Coast."
