A petition has been created calling to reassess the Sensible Sentencing Trust of its chartable status following a Facebook post made by the founder about the man fatally shot by police on the weekend.
Garth McVicar's Facebook caption read, "One less to clog the prisons! Congratulations to the New Zealand Police, our thoughts are with the officer who was forced to take this action to protect the public."
The petition is calling on the Independent Charities Registration Board to reassess the Sensible Sentencing Group Trust's charitable status.
Mr McVicar says as an organisation the Sensible Sentencing Trust support victims of crime and deal with the most hideous issues that this country has.
In response to the post Mr McVicar said to 1NEWS, "I feel very sorry for his family, but that's another issue again he made a conscious decision a couple of times to take a machete to the police.
"We have a government talking about reducing the prison population, they're not talking about reducing the crime rates.
"Why do we have guys prepared to take machetes to the police? Why do we have such high levels of those crimes?" he said.
The petition calls on an independent investigation of the links the Independent Charities Registration Board has with the Sensible Sentencing Trust.
The petition has 805 signatures at 11.50am.
