The West Coast Pike River memorial track and Paparoa great walk is starting to take shape.

The concept was proposed by the Pike families in 2015 to serve as a living memorial to the 29 men who died in the Pike River mine.

It is part of New Zealand's tenth great walk and is set to open next Easter.

DOC structures manager, Cam Jones says, "It will be a relief, but also a moment to savour. Hopefully the families will enjoy that moment with us all as well."

"A lot of us are emotionally invested in this... We all take a moment out every now and then on a beautiful day and just to pause for a moment."

The track will be 55km long and is estimated to take walkers 3 days, and cyclists 2 days to complete.
