Mr Peters said he has been vocal when talking about foreign influence in New Zealand, and says we should be reaching out in the Pacific.

New Zealand's Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters is welcoming talks between North and South Korea.

In a statement released today, Mr Peters said it was a "significant step towards building trust between the two Koreas".

"The expectation now is that the talks are conducted in good faith," Mr Peters said.

The meeting between President Moon Jae-in and Chairman Kim Jong Un will happen on April 27, ahead of a summit between Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump.

"New Zealand remains firmly committed to denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, and encourages all parties to continue to work toward this goal," Mr Peters said.

"The New Zealand Government welcomes the Republic of Korea’s leadership in laying the foundations for dialogue between the two Koreas and also between North Korea and the US."
