Australian men's cricket head coach Darren Lehmann has resigned in the wake of the ball tampering scandal.

"Saying goodbye to the players was the toughest thing I've ever had to do," Lehmann said.

On Wednesday night, the coach was cleared of involvement in the ball tampering incident.

The fourth test against South Africa at the Wanderers will be his last test at the helm of the Australian national side.

Lehmann led the Aussies to a 4-0 Ashes win over England this past summer, having coached the team since 2013.
