As it happened: England survive early Black Caps attack on day one of second Test

March 30, 2018

Relive 1 NEWS NOW's live updates of Day One of the second Test between the Black Caps and England at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

6.32pm: ENG 290/8 - Bairstow 97, Leach 10

Jonny Bairstow has kept England in the game with his hard work at the crease as he looks to bring up his fifth Test century tomorrow. He finished day one of the second Test with 97 runs not out. His 95-run partnership with Mark Wood saved the innings for the visitors just as it looked like the Black Caps were going to bowl them all out on day one.

Tim Southee finished day one with figures of 5-60 and Trent Boult had 3-79.

6.22pm: ENG 290/8 - Bairstow 97, Leach 10

A maiden over for Neil Wagner in the last over. And England's danger man Jonny Bairstow survives just three runs shy of getting his fifth Test hundred.

6.13pm: ENG 289/8 - Bairstow 96, Leach 10

Two more overs to go on day one of the second Test. Jonny Bairstow is only four runs shy of bringing up his fifth Test hundred.

6.00pm: ENG 276/8 - Bairstow 87, Leach 10

Just three runs let in after Trent Boult's over witht the ball. Frustrating times for the Black Caps as they search for two more wickets to wrap up England's first innings. England's tail enders are putting up a fight.

5.39pm: ENG 259/8 - Bairstow 78, Wood 52

WICKET! Tim Southee has bowled him. Mark Wood swings and misses with Southee's ball crashing onto the stumps.

5.30pm: ENG 255/7 - Bairstow 76, Wood 50

FIFTY! A maiden Test fifty for Mark Wood. He's been excellent since coming on for England. He hits Ish Sodhi's deliveru wide of slip and he gets two runs to bring up his maiden Test fifty. The visiting fans stand up and applaud as he raises his bat.

5.22pm: ENG 239/7 - Bairstow 62, Wood 48

A good over from Mark Wood as he hits three fours off Ish Sodhi's over. England's batsman are putting up a fight and have a 75-run partnership so far. The Black Caps team look a bit frustrated after they had early sucess after the tea break.

5.02pm: ENG 205/7 - Bairstow 58, Wood 21

HEAD SHOT! Jonny Bairstow misreads Colin de Grandhomme's delivery and the ball hits him smack bang on the helmet, with the helmet flying off Bairstow's head. It was a sharp bouncer from de Grandhomme. Bairstow is checked by medics but he seems to be okay and will continue to bat.

4.39pm: ENG 182/7 - Bairstow 52, Wood 5

FIFTY! Jonny Bairstow hits back-to-back fours off Neil Wagner's last two balls of the over and he raises his bat. The crowd acknowledge his 50 and give him a big applause. A solid half century from Bairstow as he looks to steady the ship for the visitors after the dismissal of Stokes and Broad after the tea break.

4.20pm: ENG 164/7 - Bairstow 39, Wood 0

OUT! England are in all sorts of trouble. Tim Southee delivers a good length ball, angled across the stumps. England's Stuart Broad lobs it to mid-off where Ish Sodhi makes a simple catch.

4.06pm: ENG 151/6

WICKET! Trent Boult strikes! Ben Stokes swings and edges it straight into the gloves of NZ wicketkeeper BJ Watling. A sublime ball from Boult.

3.42pm: ENG 150/5, 58 overs - Stokes 25*, Bairstow 30*

That's tea. A very good and much-needed partnership of 56 between Stokes and Bairstow. In the first hour of that session Southee and Boult made a mess of England's middle order and that means New Zealand are still slightly ahead in the game. Join us after the break for more updates.

3.36pm: ENG 144/5, 55 overs - Stokes 25*, Bairstow 24*

Another probing over from from de Grandhomme. He's going around the wicket against Stokes, who hit him for a boundary through the offside off the back foot. The NZ all-rounder responded by beating the outside edge. Williamson has seen enough, Boult is back into the attack.

3.30pm: ENG 140/5, 55 overs - Stokes 21*, Bairstow 24*

A beautiful on-drive from Bairstow in that over is a definite inclusion in the highlights of the day. The partnership is up to 46, promising for England.

3.15pm: ENG 124/5, 51 overs - Stokes 15*, Bairstow 14*

Another bouncer-laden Wagner over comes to an end with Bairstow playing uppishly to point off of an unlikely full delivery.

3.06pm: Eng 122/5, 48 overs - Stokes 14*, Bairstow 13*

De Grandhomme beats Stokes to end the over. Stokes is looking more positive with his footwork, even in defence.

2.50pm: Eng 113/5, 45 overs - Stokes 12*, Bairstow 6*

Wagner has replaced Southee in the attack. Conceding four in his first over. Interesting to note that neither Stokes nor Bairstow have looked to counter-attack despite both being positive players. Double change in the attack too with de Grandhomme into the attack at the other end.

2.43pm: Eng 104/5, 41 overs - Stokes 6*, Bairstow 3*

That's drinks. What a first hour of this middle session for the Black Caps. Plenty of work to do for Stokes, Bairstow and England's revamped lower order.

2.35pm: Eng 102/5, 41 overs - Stokes 4*, Bairstow 3*

Bairstow and Stokes, who is playing in the city of his birth, are battling hard but they look anything but fluent.

2:23pm: Eng 95/5, 38 overs - Stokes 0*, Bairstow 1*

Bairstow gets off the mark but what a couple of overs for New Zealand. The Black Caps have taken three wickets in three overs with, it must be said, the ball not doing a whole lot. A big job now for the two England batsmen at the wicket.

2:19pm: Eng 94/5, 37.2 overs - Stoneman 35, Stokes 0*

And again! Southee has Stoneman this time, one that went across the left-hander, who edged to second slip where Lathan and his safe hands made no mistake. It's absolute carnage at Hagley Oval.

2:15pm: Eng 94/4, 36.5 overs - Stoneman 35*, Stokes 0*

The Black Caps go bang bang! Boult has Malan LBW for a golden duck. No foot movement from the left-hander, who misses one that was crashing into middle.

2:11pm: Eng 93/3, 36 overs - Stoneman 34*, Malan 0*

Got him! Southee goes straight through Root. A very loose drive from the England skipper, who departs for 37.

1:58pm: ENG 86/2, 33 overs - Stoneman 33*, Root 31*

APPEAL! And just like that, the Black Caps have lost both their appeals for this innings. Boult has a big appeal to dismiss Root with an LBW but the umpire doesn't budge. Williamson instantly challenges. Ball tracking has the ball just outside the tramlines and under the new laws, that's as far as we go. It's so close to being fair but that's just how cricket goes sometimes. Here's hoping there isn't a big call later in this innings.

1:45pm: ENG 78/2, 31 overs - Stoneman 32*, Root 24*

England off to a great start after lunch with two boundaries in two overs - one off Boult and one off Sodhi. Not the kinda opening the Kiwis would've wanted.

1:02pm: ENG 70/2, 29 overs - Stoneman 28*, Root 20*

LUNCH: That'll do it for the morning session and a fairly even one at that. Couple of good breakthroughs from the Black Caps but Stoneman has done well to quell the bowling attack despite his early nerves. Root looking much better in the four slot and is finding some good boundaries. The Black Caps will want to break this partnership up early when they get back out there. We'll be back soon.

12:33pm: ENG 50/2, 21 overs - Stoneman 22*, Root 6*

Root brings up 50 for England. It's been slow and steady from England obviously just looking to build a good first innings here. Not to say the Black Caps' bowling has been stale. Just a much better opening from the visitors.

12:10pm: ENG 39/2, 17 overs - Stoneman 16*, Root 1*

WICKET! The appeal can't save him this time! Southee gets Vince with the LBW and the finger goes up! Vince appeals again but ball tracking has this one hitting the stumps and he's clearly missed it and it skims leg stump.

11:50am: ENG 25/1, 12 overs - Stoneman 12*, Vince 10*

APPEAL! And James Vince survives! Finger originally goes up to send him packing but after opting to appeal the LBW, the ball tracker shows it's missing as well. Great appeal from Vince but a positive entry for de Grandhomme who has entered the attack from Southee. He starts things off with a maiden.

11:30am: ENG 19/1, 8 overs - Stoneman 8* Vince 9*

APPEAL! Black Caps blow an early appeal as Southee's certain he has an LBW on Vince. Williamson sends it upstairs and ball tracking shows the ball missing high of the stumps! Everything else is on line but it is comfortably missing here.

11:19am: ENG 8/1, 5 overs - Stoneman 6*, Vince 0*

And Boult follows up with a maiden the next over. He's on fire at the moment. Southee doing well as well. Both getting some wonderful swing on the ball early on.

11:09am: ENG 6/1, 3 overs - Stoneman 4*, Vince 0*

WICKET! What a ball from Boult! It's full and fast angling in, hits the seam and flies into off stump to send the bails flying! Cook has no idea what's just beat him but he's gone early. What a start!

11:07am: ENG 6/0, 2 overs - Cook 2*, Stoneman 4*

Southee from the other end and this is a very positive start for the Black Caps duo. Boult finishes his over to Stoneman with two stunners just missing and after a single from Cook, Southee continues the barrage on Stoneman. English opener looks very rattled here.

11:00am: ENG 0/0, 0 overs - Cook 0*, Stoneman 0*

Cook and Stoneman are out in the middle and Boult will get things going for NZ.

PRE-MATCH

New Zealand's joy at hammering England at Eden Park is tempered by the knowledge it was such a surreal experience.

While the first Test winning margin of an innings and 49 runs was comprehensive, it was based on the tourists' near-farcical collapse on the first morning.

Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson says they can't expect to skittle England for anything like 58 again in the second Test starting in Christchurch today.

In fact he's tipping a slugfest at Hagley Oval between two evenly-matched teams.

England's batsmen came close to saving the Auckland clash on the final day, which handed Williamson's men an important reminder.

"It was nice to come out on the right side but we know this English team was very well balanced and talented side," Williamson said.

"It's important we move on from the last game and reflect on the positives but be prepared to do a lot of hard work."

If England fail to square the series, they will have suffered their longest streak without winning a game on foreign soil. Their last 12 such Tests have resulted in 10 losses and two draws.

New Zealand have developed an enviable home record over the same period, including victory in all three so far this summer.

The four Tests at Hagley Oval since its first use in 2014 have all ended in results, with the seamers generally thriving.

New Zealand notched wins inside four days against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh but couldn't match Australia two years ago, in a match remembered for Brendon McCullum's fastest century in Test history.
