Sewage leak added to the list of Middlemore Hospital's problems

March 29, 2018
The Auckland hospital has leaky buildings and the problem could be worse than initially thought

It was revealed last week that some buildings at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital are in urgent need of repair after toxic mould was discovered and now a sewage leak has been added to the list of problems.

Counties Manukau DHB confirmed to Stuff today that in addition to the toxic mould outbreak, there was asbestos in some areas with raw sewage leaks behind some wall panels.

Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, Ian Powell, has said there had been a lack of transparency by the district health board over the severity of the situation.

But New Zealand Resident Doctor's Association national secretary, Deborah Powell told Stuff, the situation has gone beyond worrying about who to blame for the situation.

The repairs to the six leaky and mouldy Middlemore Hospital buildings are expected to cost $123 million.

"Maybe we should cut our losses and build a new hospital," Ms Powell says.

"We might be better off with a brand new building we can move staff and patients into."

The DHB also says it may be cheaper to build new facilities rather than doing the repairs.

Counties Manukau DHB have made no comment on the sewage leak.
