'Yet again, at midlife, being told what to wear' - Should people stop wearing jeans at 53?

A survey suggesting a societal outlook that jeans should be reserved for a younger generation has been met with criticism.

The recent UK survey by Collect Plus of 2,000 people found finding a pair of jeans that fitted correctly was the most stressful for those aged 53 and over. Six per cent of those surveyed said they cried while jeans shopping.

Marketing Director at CollectPlus Catherine Woolfe said to the DailyMail UK it was surprising "many people think jeans are the reserve of the younger generation, suggesting that we should all put denim back on the shelf at the age of 53".

"Denim is such a universal material and with so many different styles available it's a timeless look that people of all ages can pull off."

Life coach and founder of 'Rocking Midlife' Cat Coluccio told TVNZ1's Breakfast this morning that people should wear "whatever they feel comfortable in. It's whatever floats your boat".

"Here we are, yet again, at midlife, being told what to wear, how to cut our hair, whether to wear make up."

She called it the "straw that broke the camel's back".

Ms Coluccio posted to her Facebook page and received a strong response from women who sent her images of themselves wearing jeans.

"It may seem a light hearted campaign, but at its core is a growing wave of midlife women who are launching into the second half of their lives passionate, fearless and fierce - and no longer bound by the #ageist decrees of how to act / dress / be," she wrote on her Facebook page.
