As it happened: Rookie Todd Astle spins NZ to first Test win under lights at Eden Park

March 26, 2018

Welcome to 1 NEWS NOW's live coverage of the final day of this pink ball Test between the Black Caps and England from Eden Park, Auckland.

8.18pm: So that's it, NZ take a 1-0 series lead, their 10th Test win over England and they've found more international quality in Henry Nicholls, who has cemented his spot with a huge ton, and Todd Astle who was spectacular with the problems he caused in the final evening. That's it from Eden Park, please join us for all the post match reaction later and live coverage of the second Test from Hagley Park in Christchurch starting Friday. Bye for now.

8.14pm: "Toddy bowled brilliantly", Williamson says talking about his leg-spinner. "When he got his opportunity he was outstanding."

8.12pm: Williamson is talking now, says it was a "fantastic effort", says despite the great first innings bowling, NZ were fortunate to keep getting the edges, "sometimes they miss".

And he credits Henry Nicholls, who was "just amazing" and "world class" with his 145.

8.08pm: Boult credits the team effort, in particular the team bowling effort. He got the big wicket of Root last night, who has just told Simon Doull, "we didn't deal with it very well", referencing the first day swing they faced.

But Root was pleased with the fight today, said the guys really put their hands up. His finger, which looked broken last night, is okay.

8.04pm: In the end the margin was an innings and 49 runs. Todd Astle, what a moment for him, hands aloft and doing the job down the stretch, 3-39 off 16 overs for him and at times unplayable. It's confirmed, Boult is man-of-the match, 9-99 in the match.

8.02pm: We'll have video highlights shortly, in the meantime what a moment for those gathered. The Barmy Army are quiet, they are gracious, the Kiwis hug, there's delight all round. It was a real team bowling effort on the final day with three bowlers taking wickets and de Grandhomme blocking up an end at less than two-an-over.  We'll have more shortly.

Post match: The teams are shaking hands, got to feel for Anderson, he was the last man in and NZ win with 19 overs left. Three wickets for Wagner, Astle and Boult, Trent will be man-of-the-match.

New Zealand with their 10th all-time win over England, in the end they needed just over 3 days cricket. Great performance.

7.55pm: OUT! Astle gets three, Anderson holes out to mid-off and NZ win by innings.

7.54pm: 125.1 overs, ENG 320/9 - Anderson 1, Broad 1 - 19 overs left in pink ball Test

Jimmy Anderson gets a single and he'll face the next over.

7.49pm: 125.1 overs, ENG 319/9 - Anderson 0, Broad 1

WICKET! A sensational ball from Neil Wagner! The ball comes off Chris Woakes' gloves and Henry Nicholls makes a safe catch. New Zealand need one more wicket to take out the Test match.

7.47pm: 125 overs, ENG 319/8 - Woakes 52, Broad 1

A good over from Todd Astle and England trail by 50 runs with two wickets remaining.

7.44pm: 124 overs, ENG 318/8 - Woakes 51, Broad 1

The crowd again are at it, getting vocal and trying to help the Black Caps get home, cheering on every ball. A good spell from Neil Wagner just letting in one run from that over.

7.38pm: 123 overs, ENG 317/8 - Woakes 50, Broad 1

Just one run let in from Todd Astle's over with the ball. England trail by 52 runs with two wickets remaining.

7.36pm: 122.1 overs, ENG 317/8 - Woakes 50, Broad 1

FIFTY! Todd Astle bowls to Chris Woakes and he picks up a single and brings up his 50 for England.

7.34pm: 122 overs, ENG 316/8 - Woakes 49, Broad 1 - 23 overs remaining

A maiden over for Neil Wagner, England's Stuart Broad doesn't look at all comfortable at the crease.

7.31pm: 121 overs, ENG 312/8 - Woakes 45, Broad 1 - 24 overs remaining

Another good over from NZ's spin bowler Todd Astle as he only lets five runs in his over with the ball.

7.25pm: 120 overs, ENG 311/8 - Woakes 45, Broad 0 - 25 overs remaining

Stuart Broad doesn't look happy, looks like he might have injured his thumb. The physios are at the crease to strap up his hand which he injured while diving at the crease. England trail by 58 runs.
