Watch: Ribbon's cut, doors open and hundreds rush in as Rotorua's new Kmart opens

March 16, 2018

Hundreds of excited customers rushed into the new Kmart Rotorua store when the doors opened for the first time this morning, some having camped out overnight to be front of the queue.

A powhiri, and waiata performed by local school children began the opening day proceedings before the doors opened at 8am, Fairfax reported.

Two people wearing their dressing gowns said they arrived at 8pm last night and wanted to be first in line to secure one of the opening day goodie bags of toys and chocolates.

But most wanted to clinch a bargain.

Kmart head of property Ben Smith told Fairfax it was one of the most moving Kmart opening ceremonies he'd attended.

He said it's the twenty-first Kmart store in New Zealand.
