Motorists in Nelson have encountered treacherous driving conditions along the city's waterfront today as a storm hits the area.

Video provided to 1 NEWS, filmed inside a vehicles, shows other motorists negotiating the flooded road as waves crash over the sea wall on Rocks Road.

At one point a car takes a direct hit from a wave and momentarily disappears.
