Four people have died in road accidents around the country overnight.
Two of the fatalities occurred in separate crashes on Otago roads.
In a crash at 11pm yesterday a person died on Kempthorne Rd, Heriot in Otago.
Police say it seems the vehicle left the road and crashed into a paddock.
In a second crash in near Oamaru in Otago at around 1.50am today, a man died.
The vehicle crashed into a bridge between Herbert-Hampden Road and Woodburn Road at Herbert.
Police say it appears no other vehicle was involved.
In the North Island one person has died after a car collided with a logging truck at Karapiro in Waikato.
The crash happened at 4.50am on State Highway 29 about three kilometres from State Highway One.
Emergency services are in attendance and SH29 is closed.
In another North Island crash a car hit a tree in Tauranga at 10.15pm yesterday, with the driver dying at the scene.
The official holiday period road toll period will begin at 4pm this Friday, 22 December and end at 6am on Wednesday 3 January 2018.
