A no seafood ban or rahui has been placed on the popular Matai Bay on the Karikari Peninsula this morning in Northland.

The rahui has been put in place to replenish the fisheries which local Maori say has in recent times been barren.

The rahui which includes neighbouring Waikato Bay goes out to the 70 metre mark and will be in place until at least March 2020.

Two pou or Maori carving have been erected as guardians of the sea.

Community members will be patrolling the beaches to ensure members of the public are well informed and pamphlets are being handed out.

A Give a Little Page has been set up to fundraise for the rahui .
