Emergency services have freed a person who was trapped in a car that landed on its roof after a crash in Christchurch this afternoon.

The car flipped at the corner of Durham St and Moorhouse Ave in central Christchurch.

One person was trapped in the vehicle, before being extricated and taken away in an ambulance.

A spokesperson for St John's said two patients were taken to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries.

They understand one was a 45-year-old male, but could not confirm the details of the other person involved.

The accident has caused traffic to back up in the city, with motorists told to consider using Brougham St as an alternate route..
