The family of Christchurch father Marcus Tucker who was killed last year are "relived" the man found guilty of his murder has been sentenced to life in prison.

Peter John Carroll was found guilty of killing the 36-year old and dumping his body near Lake Ellesmere and has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum 17 years non-parole period.

Mr Tucker's family held his ashes in a box outside court following the sentence.

His sister Belinda Ross said the day was bittersweet.

"We're relieved. Just thrilled that this man is going away for a long time."

"We miss him very much and feel sad that we no longer have a connection in life."

His mother Robyn Tucker said the maximum sentence was the "best outcome", but that the trial had taken a massive toll on the family.

"We've missed heaps of stuff with young kids. All their birthdays."

Carroll was found guilty of the murder following a two-week trial in the Christchurch High Court last month.

At that trial the court heard that Carroll bashed Mr Tucker a number of times around the head with steering wheel lock at a house in Spreydon on April 24, 2016.

He then left his Mr Tuckers body tied, wrapped and burnt beside Drain Road near Lake Ellesmere, just south of Christchurch.

The Crown argued the fatal beating was a case of mistaken identity and that Carroll suspected that Mr Tucker has been involved in a gun point robbery of a drug dealer.

Peter John Carroll will be 70 when he is eligible for parole.
