Former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw has announced he will compete in the extreme endurance race GODZone for a second time next year.

Richie McCaw will compete in the GODZone adventure race, a 500km team event which includes disciplines in Fiordland for the second time after debuting in the challenging event in 2016 when it was held in the Tasman district.

"I wanted to test myself". McCaw said he'd never felt so sore overall. (Source: Other)

"It will be a good way to kick off the new year and to be honest the temptation and massive challenge that Fiordland will throw at us was pretty hard to ignore."

Teams must find a series of checkpoints using a map and compass, staying within 100m of each other the entire time while they trek Fiordland National Park and the wider Southland District.

McCaw will once again team up with Rugby Players Association CEO Rob Nichol and Wanaka adventure racer Sarah Fairmaid after the trio teamed up in 2016.

The fourth member of the team this time around however will be Wanaka multisporter, champion kayaker, Bob McLachlan.

"GODZone is the ultimate adventure and it really does test your limits in every respect so it was pretty hard to not accept the challenge to race again with Rob, Sarah and Bob," McCaw said.

McCaw's team, entering as the PwC Adventure Racing Team, will compete in the 10-day event in support of the iSPORT Foundation to raise awareness for the foundation he set up with fellow rugby mates including Dan Carter and Ali Williams.

Up to 100 teams from around the world will compete at GODZone next year with the race starting on March 1.

It's the first time the event has been held over 10 days rather than seven and the multidisciplinary course will include mountain biking, kayaking, pack rafting, trekking and a ropes section.
