New Zealand could be in for a hot summer, with temperatures likely to be higher than normal right around the country.

Queenstown, Wanaka and Cromwell have had their second driest October on record, and holidaymakers are already flocking there for the warm weather.

But it's not just the south basking in the heat - the whole country will be warmer than average in the next three months.

NIWA says our summer weather will likely be dominated by north-easterly winds, bringing higher temperatures.

But there's the chance of more rain than normal for the upper parts of the North Island, and drier conditions in the south.

"We'll all get some summer but it will be in different pieces depending on where you are," TVNZ weather presenter Dan Corbett says.

And while that could be good for holiday makers, it's not good for farmers.

In the top of the North Island it's expected there will be more humid days than usual.

If you are looking for the safest bet for a pleasant summer's day, Wellington has warmer than normal temperatures predicted in the next few months, and rainfall staying at average levels.

But as for the holiday period, forecasters say it's still too early to say exactly what the weather will be doing over Christmas and New Years.
