New Zealand is in for a patchy summer if NIWA's newly released Seasonal Climate Outlook is anything to go by.

Out today, NIWA's climate outlook predicts what the weather will be like for November, December and January.

NIWA Principal scientist Chris Brandolino spoke to TVNZ1 Breakfast's Hilary Barry about what Kiwis can expect in the upcoming months.

"A warmer than average next three months is pretty likely across the entire country."

He says there will still be "cold snaps", but overall it's expected to be warmer than normal.

Winds are expected to more more north-easterly, which will bring near-normal or above normal rainfall to the northern and eastern parts of the North Island.

However, "it doesn't mean it will rain every day," said Mr Brandolino.

The north-easterly winds could also bring more humid days.

"If you're not a fan of warm humid days, or warm humid nights, this three month period may not be for you."

That same wind could be a dry wind in the West Coast of the South Island, and further south, so NIWA are predicting rainfall will be near-normal or below normal for those regions.

Which isn't good for farmers in the region who are already on track for the second driest October on record.
