Watch: Young Jerome Kaino speaks after '04 Baa Baas match about first try - what does '17 Kaino remember?

November 1, 2017

Jerome Kaino seems to remember his first try as an All Black pretty well - even though it was 13 years ago against the same rag-tag opposition he's preparing to face this weekend.

Kaino had a whirlwind rise to the All Blacks after being called in from the Auckland NPC side.

He made the most of his appearance against the Barbarians in the 2004 match at Twickenham when he scored a memorable try by beating Matt Rogers to score.

Kaino said after the game back in 2004 it was luck.

"I was just fortunate to get around ol' superstar Matt Rogers," he said.

Media asked Kaino about that try this morning - 13 years on - and he still recited it like it was yesterday.

"I think it was a turnover and from what I remember Jimmy Cowan threw a Hail Mary over and I was lucky enough to catch it.

"I had a little more gas in the legs than I do now!"
