Kiwis halfback Shaun Johnson has praised teammate Te Maire Martin, as the young playmaker was given the nod to start at five-eighth in his side's Rugby League World Cup clash with Scotland on Saturday.

Martin, 22, has shone in the NRL this season, helping steer the North Queensland Cowboys to the grand final, having moved from the Penrith Panthers mid season.

Speaking to media today, Johnson said that the youngster has earned his position in the halves for this weekend's clash.

"He's had a really good year," Johnson said.

"It's just really pleasing to see him rewarded for his form throughout the year and getting a start this weekend."

"I know he's pretty excited by it."
