A new satellite city could be built in South Auckland to house thousands of people if the Government takes up an idea that's been revealed today.
Infrastructure New Zealand, which promotes best practice in infrastructure development, says the Government should aim for new housing and employment on unzoned land along the rail line through Paerata to deal with Auckland's housing shortage.
A promotional video of the proposal says the satellite city could meet the immediate needs to accommodate 40,000 households, and eventually up to 500,000.
The city would provide a range of housing types and include theatres, cycleways and public transport.
Infrastructure NZ chief executive Stephen Selwood says if the satellite city was supported by a $2 billion upgrade of the rail corridor, the southern rail line could be four-tracked, allowing non-stop commuter services from the satellite to central Auckland and work places in between.

That would put the new city within 30 minutes of the CBD and would allow rail freight to be separated from traditional commuter services, he said.
