A brand new brown kiwi chick hatched overnight at Rotorua's Rainbow Springs Nature Park - and the search is on for a suitable name.

It is not yet known whether the chick is a male or a female, but Breakfast viewers were asked to suggest names.

The park has been involved in kiwi conservation since 1975, and has been raising kiwi since 1995.

A typical incubation period for a kiwi egg takes about 78 days in artificial conditions and Rainbow Springs has hatched more than 1500 eggs.

The crew of TVNZ 1's Breakfast were delighted with the arrival, with Hilary Barry saying the chick was "so gorgeous".
