A Japanese car manufacturer had taken the novel step of putting airbags on the outside of its concept car as an idea on how to prevent dents and damage.

Toyoda Gosei's Flesby II vehicle uses latest-generation rubber airbags on the outside, which can change shape using electric power.

LED lights projected on to the on the wheel airbags can be used to communicate the intentions of the driver.

The company also says that, in the event of a collision with a pedestrian, the soft, rubberised body would cause less injury.

The car is still only a concept car, but Toyoda Gosei believes elements of its design could be implemented in production models by 2030.
