Provocative cartoonist Tom Scott has infuriated New Zealand's politicians for many years, much to the delight of his readers and confesses he is still learning six decades after his artistic talent was first discovered.

His cartoons are the only part of the Dominion Post that are still done by hand and is developing new sketches for the country's new government, focusing on Jacinda Ardern.

"I'm still learning the DNA and plains of her face," he told TVNZ's Q+A programme.

"Winston is hard to draw, only when he started to get a few lines when his nicotine craving caught up with his...skin and then suddenly he got a bit more character."

Tom Scott originals are desirable acquisitions, especially if they are about you.

John Key would often ring Mr Scott about his cartoons, while Helen Clark "only asked for one" when he drew the former Prime Minister in a scrum with Sir Colin Meads and Tanga Umanga.

"That was on her wall in her UN office... she liked that one," he said.

However, some weren't fans of his cartoons, such as former Prime Minister Robert Muldoon who famously banned Mr Scott from his press conferences.

"I read somewhere that Muldoon was bullied at school and then he grows up, is successful...gets into parliament and is mocked by a red head...and he can't bear it.

"I didn't like press conferences anyway," admitting the ban boosted his popularity among the public.
