2017 set to be worst year on record for gun violence in US

The 1 NEWS Breakfast team broke down the horrific US gun violence numbers for 2017, with nearly 12,000 people killed by guns, not including suicide. (Source: Other)

The single largest gun massacre in US history occurred in Las Vegas overnight, but 2017 itself is also on track to the worst year on record for gun violence in the US.

The below 2017 US gun violence numbers do not include deaths by suicide:

 - 46,595 individual gun crimes

 - 11,652 people killed by guns  

 - 23,516 people injured by guns

 - 545 children aged under 11 killed by guns

 - 2433 children aged between 12 and 17 killed by guns

Out of the 46,595 gun incidents in 2017 only just over 3,000 were defensive or unintentional.
