Calls for caution over social media apps after reporter given 800 pages of personal data about her from Tinder

A privacy lawyer is urging Kiwis to be cautious and read the fine print when signing up to social media sites such as Tinder, as users could be handing over personal information to a number of apps.

Earlier this week, a reporter in the UK asked Tinder about her personal data that the app had collected and was sent 800 pages of information about her.

The data included her Facebook likes, photos from her Instagram and even conversations with her Tinder matches.

Often these apps are linked and your personal information is too, allowing social media providers to develop sophisticated algorithms so advertising can be targeted.

Kathryn Dalziel, a privacy lawyer, told 1 NEWS most smart phone users tend to skim over terms and conditions when signing up to apps.

"You'll find in those privacy policies they're your authorisation to say the can do what they like with your personal information," Ms Dalziel said.
