Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jim Bolger said chemistry is needed when it comes to forming a coalition in a government.

Mr Bolger spoke on TVNZ1's Q+A this morning, saying policy was "hugely important", but there "has to be some chemistry" when it came to what would be important for NZFirst leader Winston Peters and his decision on which party to join in an MMP parliament.

Mr Bolger was the first leader of a New Zealand MMP parliament in 1996, where his National-led government joined with NZ First.

He said "chief-to-chief" contact was important to Mr Peters' in the negotiations and that the NZ First leader was "tough, as you would expect".

Despite Mr Bolger expecting National "will have a good result", he said a win is "never in the bag until the votes are counted". (Source: Other)

"You just have to expect it will take a little while and move forward on that basis, but the main thing is to listen carefully to the nuances of where the openings might be."

"You’re not out there taking pot-shots at each other, you’re looking for a solution."
