Former Prime Minister Jim Bolger is urging the Green Party to negotiate a coalition government with the National Party.
On TVNZ1's Q+A this morning, the former Nation Party leader said it was the Green Party's "responsibility" to "talk to both sides".
He said the Greens had campaigned on influencing the country's environmental approach, "then why presume that you can only talk to one side?"
"They fail to understand MMP if they fail to do that," he said.

"We seem to have… a Green Party in New Zealand that is really a left-party in disguise, and that's a loss for New Zealand if that's true."
Mr Bolger was the first Prime Minister to lead a MMP parliament in New Zealand, in 1996.
He said a potential loss of party identity was "a pathetic argument".
"Why are you there if you're not going to go into government and do something?"
