One of Waimakariri District's longest-serving former councillors, Robbie Brine, is being remembered " for his commitment to the community" following his death aged 64.
His family confirmed his death in a post online, saying he died in hospital on Sunday "surrounded by his family and loved ones".
"Robbie was a much-loved son of Joy and David Brine, and a cherished older brother to Karina, David and Michelle. He was a loved partner of Jessica Heron and a close friend of his first wife, Julie Brine," the post read.
"Robbie was a deeply loved and adored father to Matthew, Luke and Rebekah, and a treasured part of the lives of their partners, Melissa and Sarah. He was also a proud and loving grandfather to Hannah, Lainey and Flynn Brine, and Jackson and Charlotte Cresswell."
Waimakariri District Council mourned his death, saying his decades of public service would leave an enduring legacy across the district.
Mayor Dan Gordon said Brine would be remembered "for his commitment to the community, both as an elected representative and as Rangiora’s Community Constable".
“The Council is devastated at his passing. He will be sadly missed," Gordon said.
“I worked alongside Robbie since 2004 and am grateful for his exceptional contribution over so many years. He helped shape many of the facilities our residents enjoy today, leaving a lasting legacy for our district.
“Our thoughts are with Robbie’s family, friends and all those who worked alongside him.”
Brine served nine terms as a Waimakariri District councillor from 1998 to 2025, a total of 27 years. He continued his service on the Rangiora-Ashley Community Board, to which he was elected in 2025.
Board Chair Liz McClure said Brine's "dedication to his community reflected his integrity and genuine commitment to make a difference".
"His time and knowledge were always given freely to help others, and I am grateful for all I learned from Robbie. His genuine love and passion for the community will be remembered with respect and gratitude. We extend our heartfelt sympathy and love to Robbie’s friends and family at this sad time."
During his time on Council, Robbie served on a wide range of committees, including as a member of the Community and Recreation Committee, contributing to significant community projects, including the MainPower Stadium, Southbrook Sports Club, and the Dudley Park and Kaiapoi Aquatic Centres.
He also held the solid waste portfolio and Chaired Council’s Hazardous Waste Working Party, and represented Waimakariri on the Canterbury Waste Joint Committee, contributing to waste management decisions locally and across the region.
Alongside his local government service, Robbie served as Rangiora’s Community Constable, holding the rank of Senior Constable. His work in both roles reflected a longstanding commitment to the people of Waimakariri.
"Council will acknowledge Robbie’s passing at its next meeting and the flag in front of the Council building will be lowered to half-mast on the day of his memorial this Friday, October 16, as a mark of respect," Gordon added.
"Robbie has been a long and faithful servant to the Waimakariri District devoting half of his life as an elected member, let alone his service to community police. We are indebted to him for his outstanding community service. Rest in Peace, Robbie.”
Flags at Council services centres will fly at half mast today in his honour.
Brine's memorial service would be held on Friday October 16 at midday at the Rangiora RSA.
