Three people on board a small boat have been rescued by a Royal NZ Air Force crew after being missing for four days at sea off Kiribati.

The trio from Kiribati were found on board a 3.7m white fibreglass boat on Sunday after being missing since October 7, the New Zealand Defence Force said.

Their vessel had gone missing between Abaiang Island and the Kiribati capital of Tarawa.

After finding the boat, the P-8A Poseidon crew maintained watch while the group were taken to safety on a vessel responding to the search and rescue mission.
