A UK wildlife park has confirmed the tiger that killed a man who entered its enclosure will not be euthanised.

The man was seen entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster on Saturday (local time) before he was mauled to death.

The incident was reported at around 1.35pm and the tiger "subsequently attacked the man, resulting in serious injury", local police said. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, reports said.

In a statement, Yorkshire Wildlife Park thanked those who expressed concern and said their "thoughts and heartfelt sympathies" were with the family of the man who was killed.

"The park will be closed today and the staff team who were deeply affected by events will receive specialist support," the statement read. It also confirmed the tiger, named Altai, was "safe and well and will not be euthanised".

Foreign secretary and MP for Doncaster North, Ed Miliband, said he was "deeply saddened" and sent his "thoughts and deepest condolences to the family of the individual who died".

A visitor at the park wrote in a social media post that she saw the man before the incident, and that he was "happily enjoying" his visit.

"The man who I saw on the bridge with his earpods in dancing was happily enjoying seeing the tiger," the post read.

"He asked a total stranger to take a picture of him with the tiger in the background."

South Yorkshire police said the man’s family was aware of the incident and were being supported, and encouraged people not to share videos of the incident.
