A man has appeared in court charged with murder following two deaths in Christchurch early on Saturday.
58-year-old forklift operator Rodney Stewart Smith didn't enter a plea to two murder charges when he made his first appearance in Christchurch District Court today.
Two people were found dead and two others seriously injured shortly before 1am on Saturday at a social housing complex in Olliviers Road in Phillipstown.

Smith, who appeared via audiovisual link from prison, is facing two murder charges, one attempted murder charge, and one of wounding with intent.
He also faces a fifth charge of intentionally damaging the tyres on a car belonging to one of the people he's accused of killing.
He didn't seek bail or name suppression, and has been remanded in custody to appear the High Court on October 29.
