Party gatecrasher tasered after hurling rocks at police from river

The 32-year-old faces multiple charges, ranging from wilful damage and burglary to assaulting first responders and threatening to kill.

A man accused of gate-crashing a Dunedin party, allegedly assaulting one of the hosts before hurling rocks at police from the Water of Leith and being tasered, now faces multiple charges, including assaulting first responders.

Police were called to an address on Leith St at around 2pm on Sunday after reports of a disorder incident involving a man who had gone into a private party uninvited.

Senior Sergeant Ian Notman said the man had allegedly assaulted one of the hosts, who was unknown to him, and caused further disruption.

Attending officers found the man in question standing in the Water of Leith, he added.

"After officers negotiated with him to leave the water and stop throwing rocks, he continued to behave in a threatening manner. As a result, a taser was deployed and the man was taken into custody."

Notman said the man suffered a medical event after his arrest and was treated by ambulance staff.

"While receiving care, he allegedly assaulted attending paramedics and police officers."

New offences for attacks on first responders passed into law in August, with the previous offence of assaulting a police officer changed to include paramedics, firefighters and prison officers – now carrying a maximum penalty of three years' imprisonment.

A 32-year-old man has charged with threatening to kill, burglary, common assault, wilful damage, resisting police and assaulting first responders.

He was due to appear in the Dunedin District Court at a later date.
