A batch of Tip Top Jelly Tip ice creams has been recalled because it may contain bacteria that can cause diarrhoea.
The recalled products were sold in a six-pack with a best-before date of September 30, 2028. Woolworths supermarkets in the North Island sold them.
New Zealand Food Safety said the ice cream may contain Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness.
“They should not be eaten. You can return them to the place of purchase for a refund. If that’s not possible, throw them out,” NZFS deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle said.
NZFS said it had not received any reports of illness. The products have been removed from store shelves and have not been exported.
In milk or products containing it, the bacteria's illness usually causes diarrhoea.
Symptoms tend to appear one to six hours after eating contaminated food. Most people recover within 12 to 24 hours.
NZFS said it would work with Tip Top to "understand how the contamination occurred and prevent its recurrence".
