Police have launched a homicide investigation after two people were found dead at separate properties near Reefton on the West Coast.
Emergency services were first called to an address on State Highway 7 near Rahu Saddle, between Reefton and Springs Junction, at about 7.50am on Tuesday after concerns had been raised for a person.
Detective Inspector Geoff Baber said officers found a body when they arrived.
"Upon arrival, a person was located deceased at the property," Baber said.
Further inquiries led officers to another address on Maimai Rd were a second person was located dead.
St John said it responded to both incidents, sending a PRIME unit to SH7 and a first response unit, PRIME responder and an operations manager to Maimai Rd.
Baber said police did not believe there was any risk to the public and were not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.
"Members of the community may notice an increased police presence while we continue to gather information to establish exactly what occurred," he said.
"We acknowledge people will be understandably shaken following this incident. We are providing support to the loved ones of those who died and the wider community."
