A man has been critically injured after falling from a moving vehicle near Christchurch's Lyttelton Tunnel over the weekend.
A video circulating on social media shows a man holding onto the back of a van as it travels from Lyttelton to Christchurch.
Police were called to Tunnel Rd at around 11.40pm after a person was found on the road with injuries.
"Initial indications are that the person may have fallen from a moving vehicle," a police spokesperson said.
St John said it responded with two rapid response units, an operations manager and an ambulance.
"Our ambulance staff treated one patient and transported them to Christchurch Public Hospital in a critical condition."
The serious crash unit examined the scene with inquiries ongoing.
The Lyttelton Tunnel, which runs nearly 2km through the Port Hills, connects Christchurch and Lyttelton and carries more than 10,000 vehicles daily.
