Tararua District Council said it is "deeply saddened by the tragic passing" of one of its councillors.
Councillor Peter Johns served the community for 15 years and and "worked tirelessly to help move Tararua forward", the council wrote in a statement.
"A passionate advocate for Woodville and our wider district, Peter was a character known for speaking his mind, standing up for his community, and always bringing energy, commitment and humour to the council table."
Tararua District Mayor Scott Gilmore said Johns' passing was a "great loss" for both the council and the wider community.
"We are devastated by our loss. Peter has become much more than a valued colleague; he was also a good friend.”
"He also had a wonderful sense of humour and was a pleasure to be around. Council meetings will not feel the same without him. He will be greatly missed."
Mayor Gilmore extends condolences on behalf of the council to Peter's family, friends, fellow councillors, and all those who knew him.
