Car hit by freight train near Invercargill, roads closed

Emergency services responded to the crash near the intersection of State Highway 1 and Mill Rd South at around 1.20pm.

A car and freight train have collided at a level crossing east of Invercargill this afternoon, forcing the closure of a section of State Highway 1.

St John sent two ambulances and an operations manager to the scene, referring further inquiries to police.

A KiwiRail spokesperson said the collision occured with a southbound freight train at a crossing protected with flashing lights and bells.

"Emergency services are on site and any further comment should come from the police," they added.

A police spokesperson said traffic management was in place. "Motorists are advised to expect delays while emergency services work at the scene."

NZTA said State Highway 1 was closed between the intersection with Mill Rd North and Racecourse Rd roundabout.

"People are asked to avoid the area or take an alternative route, or to follow the direction of emergency services at the site," an NZTA spokesperson.

Fire and Emergency NZ crews responded from Invercargill and Kingswell.
