Hastings District Council is reviewing speeds on almost 60 stretches of road.

Before doing so, it has to consult the public, consider their feedback, and get the required approval under New Zealand’s speed-limit rules.
New Zealand’s default speed limit is 50 km/h in urban areas and 100 km/h on open roads and rural highways, unless otherwise posted.
Councillors will discuss the proposal at a council meeting on Thursday, September 17.
The agenda recommendation is for the council to endorse the proposed speed management plan for public consultation.
The agenda says the proposal aims to review speed limits for reasons including the extension of urban development areas, to better reflect the road environment following public requests, to accommodate land use activity changes and to provide a buffer for school speed limits.
Council would also consult with Police, NZTA, the AA, Road Transport Forum New Zealand and any other road users it felt would be affected.
The agenda says some of the biggest changes, such as 100km/h to 50km/h, are on short ‘no exit’ roads such as Maultsaid Place in Longlands and are intended to fix anomalies.
Other changes are on short stretches of long roads, such as 700 metres of Napier Rd on the edge of Havelock North and 1.35km of Middle Rd.
None of the proposed speed limit drops are for a longer stretch than 3km.
