Police are investigating after a man arrived at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital with an unexplained gunshot wound overnight.

Detective Inspector Karen Bright said the injured man presented at Middlemore Hospital.

"He received a serious injury and remains in hospital," Bright said.

Inquiries were now underway to determine the full circumstances of what had occurred, including who was responsible, Bright said.
