The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) will temporarily move about 750 staff out of its Wellington office after receiving engineering advice about parts of the building.
Staff working at the department's 45 Pipitea St office would be relocated to other DIA properties across the capital while remedial seismic work was carried out.
DIA chief executive Paul James said the department had recently received engineering advice relating to "specific floors" of the building.
"Based on that advice we have decided to temporarily relocate staff to our other Wellington properties," he said.
All staff were expected to be out of the Pipitea St building by Friday and would be permitted to return once the seismic work was complete.
The DIA did not say how long the remedial work was expected to take.
James said the department was planning a "coordinated and safe exit" and there was enough capacity at its other Wellington offices to accommodate the 750 affected workers.
"We do not expect any service disruption for New Zealanders because of this change," he said.
