A person has died in a house fire on Matakana Island in the Bay of Plenty this morning.
A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson told 1News that crews were called to Paama Court on the island, located north of Tauranga and Mt Maunganui, at 4.09am on Saturday.
Crews from Matakana Island, Greerton, and Ōmokoroa responded to the blaze.
"At this stage we can advise that one person was located deceased inside the property," Senior Sergeant Dave Marshall said.
One person was treated for burns.
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said it responded with a helicopter, and a person was taken to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
Matakana Island is a long, flat barrier island in the Western Bay of Plenty which is 20km in length and rarely more than 3km wide.
