A magnitude 4.2 earthquake has rattled Taranaki this morning, with around 2000 people reporting feeling the shaking.

The tremor struck about 15km north of Ōpunake at 6.46am on Sunday, according to GeoNet.

It was recorded at a depth of 8km, with GeoNet describing the shaking as "light".

Around 2000 people had reported feeling the quake on GeoNet shortly after it struck.

In Westown, New Plymouth, one Facebook user described the quake as "quite a good belt", while another reported a "decent shake".

Further north in Waitara, a resident described it as "short and sharp", while in Eltham, another said they felt a "fast shudder".
